Description

Comforting, savory, and cheesy, this French Onion Soup Rice is a flavorful dish combining rich beef broth, sweet caramelized onions, and gooey cheese.

Ingredients

  • Condensed French Onion Soup (10.5 oz can) – The flavorful base of the dish.
  • Beef Broth (2 cups) – Rich, savory liquid that enhances the dish.
  • Long-Grain White Rice (1 1/4 cups) – Fluffy rice that absorbs all the flavors.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar (1 tablespoon) – A tangy kick to balance the richness.
  • Unsalted Butter (4 tablespoons, sliced) – Adds richness and smoothness.
  • Gruyère Cheese (3/4 cup, shredded) – Nutty, melty cheese for the ultimate creaminess.
  • Mozzarella Cheese (1/2 cup, shredded) – For that gooey, stretchy cheese pull.
  • Fresh Thyme Leaves – Adds a fresh, herbal note.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • Mix the base: Combine French onion soup, beef broth, rice, and apple cider vinegar in a 10-inch oven-safe skillet. Stir well.
  • Add butter: Place the sliced butter over the rice mixture evenly. Cover tightly with aluminum foil.
  • Bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes.
  • Broil: Increase the oven to broil. Add Gruyère and mozzarella on top, then broil for 5 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  • Garnish with fresh thyme leaves and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a deeper flavor, caramelize additional onions and stir them into the rice before baking.
  • You can substitute chicken or vegetable broth for a lighter taste or if you prefer a non-beef option.
  • Use freshly grated cheese for the best melt and texture; pre-shredded cheese may not melt as smoothly.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave with a splash of broth to keep the rice moist.
  • This dish can be paired with a fresh green salad or crispy garlic bread for an extra layer of flavor.
