Hey There! I’m David Morgan
Food Photographer & Digital Creator | Visual Branding Consultant | Traveler | Coffee enthusiast | Age 34
Austin, Texas–based creative who believes great visuals help you taste with your eyes first—light, texture, story.
My Story
Photography came into my life through food—not the other way around. In my early 20s, I worked in a small café, taking quick phone shots of our pastries to post online. I didn’t think much of it until customers started showing up saying, “I saw the photo and had to try it.” That’s when I realized the power of a well-composed image.
Over the years, I studied lighting, styling, and composition like others study recipes. I moved from phone snapshots to DSLR, from basic editing to full-scale creative direction. Cakes became my specialty—not just because they’re beautiful but full of detail, color, and personality. Capturing that magic became my obsession.
The Turning Point
2018 I was invited to photograph a cake competition in New York City. Surrounded by towering sugar sculptures and mirror-glazed masterpieces, I realized this wasn’t just about documenting dessert—it was about telling the maker’s story in a single frame.
One of my photos from that event went viral, landing me work with bakeries, recipe developers, and food brands nationwide. It was the moment I shifted from “taking pictures” to crafting visual narratives that inspire and sell.
What I Learned the Hard Way
When I first started freelancing, I thought my camera was enough. I quickly learned that food photography is 80% preparation—styling, sourcing props, and understanding the food.
I also discovered that rushing a shoot almost always shows in the final image. Now, I plan meticulously and never underestimate the importance of collaboration with bakers and chefs.
My Approach Now
I focus on creating imagery that makes people feel something—the anticipation of slicing into a perfectly frosted cake or the comfort of a homemade loaf. I work with natural and artificial light, depending on the mood, and I style every shot to highlight texture, color, and emotion.
Short-form video is now part of my toolkit—those mesmerizing cake pours and frosting swirls keep people watching (and craving) online.
What I Believe
- Food photography is storytelling, not just documentation.
- Light is the secret ingredient.
- Every crumb, drip, and swirl matters.
- Collaboration between a baker and a photographer brings out the best results.
- A good image makes you hungry before you’ve tasted a bite.

A Little More About Me
Outside the studio, I usually hunt for the best espresso in whatever city I visit. Travel fuels my creativity—each location brings new light, textures, and flavors to capture. I also firmly believe that breakfast can (and should) include cake.
